The narrow riverside strip where Nakasu's open-air yatai stalls set up after dark — steam rising off ramen, tempura, oden and yakitori counters shoulder to shoulder along the Naka River. Most stalls run roughly 18:00 to 2:00 and close in bad weather or one day a week (often Sunday), so it's worth having a backup night if it rains. Almost all are cash only, seats are shared stools, and it's polite to move on after a drink and a dish or two rather than linger for hours — call out through the curtain to ask if there's room rather than waiting in silence.
A little corner of the Kawabata covered arcade serving famously sweet zenzai (mochi in sweet red-bean soup), plus a chilled shaved-ice version in summer. It only opens Friday to Sunday and public holidays — but runs daily during the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival (July 1-14). One of Nakasu's grand old authentic bars, pouring Nikka whisky and classic cocktails from a counter that's been open since 1958 — brick front, no cover charge, and bartenders who trained here have gone on to open dozens of bars across the city.
